When are UV rays most problematic for the eyes?

The sun's rays are most intense between 10:00 and 14:00, but this is not the only time when UV rays can damage the eyes. Glares and reflections can also create problems, so it is advisable to always keep keep your sunglasses handy in snowy, wet or sandy conditions or while driving (windshields are a big source of glare). An increased risk of eye damage from UV radiation also comes from exposure to sunlamps, tanning beds, photosensitizing drugs, high altitude and proximity to the equator.

What are the different types of sunglass lenses available?

Since there are so many types of lenses available, it is advisable to contact your optician or optometrist for advice on choosing sunglasses.

Sunglasses that have an anti-reflective (AR) treatment applied to the back of the lenses reduce glare by preventing light from reflecting off the back surface of the glasses. Mirrored lenses limit the amount of light entering your eyes, providing greater comfort. Mirrored treatment (also called flash treatment) consists of a highly reflective coating applied to the front surface of sunglasses lenses to reduce the amount of light entering the eyes. enters the eye.

These lenses are particularly useful when carrying out activities in bright conditions, such as skiing on a sunny day. Gradient lenses have a tint that slopes from top to bottom, so the top part of the lens is darker.

These lenses are suitable for driving as they protect the eyes from sunlight coming from above and allow more light to pass through the lower half of the lens allowing a clearer view of the dashboard. Dual tint refers to gradient lenses in which the top and bottom portions of the lens are dark, while the middle portion is one shade lighter.

Dual tint lenses are a great choice if you want sunglasses that aren't too dark, but protect your eyes from bright sunlight coming from above and light reflecting off sand, water, and other reflective surfaces placed low at the height of the feet. Photochromic lenses adjust the level of darkening based on the amount of UV light they are exposed to.

Do darker sunglasses lenses offer more UV protection than lighter lenses?

Darker colors reduce the amount of visible light passing through the lenses compared to lighter colors , but do not necessarily provide greater protection against invisible UV rays. For adequate sun protection , make sure your sunglasses block 100% of UV rays , regardless of the color or darkness of the lenses.

If the sun doesn't bother my eyes, do I still need to wear sunglasses?

  • UVA rays have longer wavelengths and pass through glass easily; Experts disagree on whether or not UVA rays can harm your eyes.
